TOM FREWEN AGAINST NEW ZEALAND HERALD

Overview

Tom Frewen complained about an article in the Wednesday Herald on August 29 about the forthcoming publication of a new glossy magazine based on theHerald’s long-running weekly fashion and lifestyle magazine, Viva.

He complained the article was “advertorial” for one of the publisher’s own magazines and should have been clearly labelled as such.

The article was clearly an in-house promotion of one of its magazines.It is stated in the opening sentence that Viva is part of theWednesday Herald. Viva comes out regularly as part of the Herald.Readers were unlikely to mistake the article for anything other than what it was.

There is no obvious breach of any of the Media Council’s principles. Publications should indicate material that is sponsored or financed by a third party, but this does not apply to material “sponsored” by the publication itself.

There are therefore No grounds for complaint.
