Decision: No Grounds to Proceed

Publication: Bay Chronicle

Principle: Discrimination and Diversity

Ruling Categories: Discrimination

Overview

Bay Buzz published a story on November 22 about water issues. Thomas Kay complained about a sentence that said until politicians “have the balls to tackle the issue of allocation squarely, transparently and with optimal future land use in mind, addressing the water security aspirations of CHB will be stymied”. He said this was sexist and suggested that in order to be “courageous, strong and make good decisions one must have male genitalia”.

The council considers the phrase in question is common vernacular and while it might be slightly sexist, it’s relatively unimportant in the context of the story and does not breach any Media Council principles.

Decision: There were insufficient grounds to proceed.
