DONALD MCDONALD AGAINST THE DOMINION POST

Case Number: 2982

Council Meeting: DECEMBER 2020

Decision: No Grounds to Proceed

Publication: The Dominion Post

Ruling Categories: Politicians
Unfair Coverage

Overview

Donald McDonald lodged a complaint against The Dominion Post. Mr McDonald has stood as a candidate in local body and general elections. Most recently he stood in 2020 General Election in the Rongotai electorate.

Mr McDonald’s complaint is wide-ranging and covers many issues going back several years. As far as we can make it out the most relevant part of this complaint relates to a section of a piece published inThe Dominion Post on October 14, which profiled all the candidates standing in this electorate.

For Mr McDonald the piece read

Don McDonald

Independent

McDonald has stood previously for council and is well known in Newtown. He is a prolific letter writer and is interested in everything from mathematics to traffic congestion.

Mr McDonald appears to be concerned that the piece did not give him fair coverage. However it is impossible to discern any complaint that comes within the rules.

The Media Council notes this was an editorial piece, not an advertisement which would have required an authorization note. It seems there was no inaccuracy in the description of Mr McDonald’s interests.

Finding: There are insufficient grounds for the complaint to proceed.
