Tim Watkin appointed to the Press Council

The Press Council is delighted to announce the appointment of Tim Watkin to the Council as the digital journalist member.

Tim has won multiple Qantas awards, including print journalist of the year and the prestigious Wolfson Fellowship in 2004. In print, he has been a senior writer at the NZ Herald, deputy editor of the Listener, and a blogger for the Guardian in Britain. His experience ranges across newspapers, magazines, freelancing, television and blogging. He has also tutored New Media at AUT.

In 2008 Tim and his wife Eleanor Black launched the website Pundit, which they still own and edit.

Tim currently produces The Nation, TV3’s weekend national affairs programme and regularly provides commentary on National Radio and Newstalk ZB.

The digital member is a new appointment for the Press Council reflecting the Council’s jurisdictional extension into the digital news and blogging platforms. The digital member will take full part in the consideration of complaints and discussion of Council business, but will bring additional expertise in the digital environment to the Council table.

Tim Watkin attended the June meeting as an observer and took up his appointment from July 1, 2014.
