Permanent members of the NZ Media Council are the Newspaper Publishers’ Association (NPA), the Magazine Publishers Association (MPA), the Community Newspapers Association (CNA) and the union, E Tu.
As a result of changes to the constitution of the NZ Media Council, publications and media outlets which are not members of the above organisations may also apply for associate membership of the NZ Media Council.
Membership enquiries should be directed to the NZ Media Council at katrina@mediacouncil.org.nz. Information about the Council can be found on its website.
Any request for NZ Media Council membership shall be considered by its governance committee, the NZ Media Association Inc. Acceptance is at the NZ Media Association’s sole discretion.
In considering applications for membership of the NZ Media Council, the NZ Media Association will assess an applicant’s ability to meet the journalism standards required of members. These are set out in the Media Council’s Statement of Principles on its website. The NZ Media Council principles include requirements relating to accuracy, fairness and balance, independence and integrity.
Members will be required to publish a statement in their publication or on their website referring to their membership of the NZ Media Council and their compliance with the Council’s complaints procedure. As is the case with all media which accept Council jurisdiction, complainants must first raise their grievance with the editor or publisher of the media outlet concerned. If the complainant is not satisfied with the publisher’s response or does not receive a response, a complaint may then be lodged with the NZ Media Council.
Members will be required to give a written undertaking that they accept both the Statement of Principles and the complaints procedure.
Applications should be emailed to:
NZ Media Council
E: katrina@mediacouncil.org.nz
After your application is approved by the Board, you’ll receive a membership invoice, and your organisation will be listed on the NZ Media Council website.
Note: For non-English journalism, the cost of the translation rests with the publisher, the translation will be shared with the complainant for transparency.
I am fully aware of the duties and obligations expressed in the Media Council’s Constitution, Statement of Principles and Complaints Procedure and undertake to comply with those duties and obligations should membership be approved.
I will ensure that all those we employ are familiar with these obligations.
I declare that I have the authority to sign on behalf of the named entities.
